Canon Medical Systems Corporation is one of the biggest medical device manufacturing companies based in Japan. Competition is gaining on market share rapidly, and the Client wants to regain its place by innovating and reinventing the experience with a user-centered design approach.
Capgemini partnered with Client to transform the user experience of their CT Scanner Operating System.
Business Needs
After the stakeholder interviews and requirement gathering workshops, we have concluded that the following needs to be addressed in the solution:
Redesign the OS to exceed the standards set by the competitors.
Analyze and improve the user experience of the current system.
Make it more adaptable for the global user base.
Create a new design language that is scalable across different products.
Enhance the system's efficiency while maintaining the patient's safety as the top priority.
Minimal training requirements. It must be easy to learn and use.
Minimize downtime with quick & easy maintenance.
Learn From The Actual Users
As we were redesigning the product, our approach was to conduct the usability testing to identify issues, followed by contextual enquiries to probe identified issues in detail. The following are the key insights: Redesign the OS to exceed the standards set by the competitors.
Poor visual design to help users navigate through the screen and have lack of accessibility.
Lack of role-based mapping to the information architecture.
Selecting the scan protocols before performing the scan is counterintuitive.
Lack of visibility of the system status, like image processing and transfer, tube seasoning status, notifications, etc.
Contextual help is not available in the system, and users have to rely on the support team.
Users find it challenging to track the in-progress activities in the background as different functions open in different pop-up windows on top of each other.
Operators work on these systems in dark rooms for long hours regularly.
Find it difficult to use and manage scan protocols.
Features and Solutions
Workflow-based user interface to reduce the learning curve and is faster, safer, and easier to perform the operations.
Redefine the information architecture to categorize functions and information, and let the user easily navigate across them.
Use of icons and visual elements to create balance in complex screens and to increase efficiency.
Design User Interface in dark theme with muted colours to give the user comfort in long dark room sessions.
Build Protocol Manager, integrate it with scan, and have emergency scan functionality to increase the efficiency of the system.
Create a system close to the user’s mental model, effective use of iconography, and contextually available quick help to the user to make it easy to learn and use.
Build a design system that can work across different product lines and geography.
Provide basic troubleshooting functions for easy maintenance.

With the new collaborative system, a patient can be sent for scanning quickly with more ease.
Workflow based model and better UX design makes it easy to learn and use.
It has become easier to process RAW data with the new intuitive UI.
Step by step workflow guide user to finish the task more efficiently.
New well-structured UI makes it a lot easier to manage protocols and patient’s data.
Giving an easy option to calibrate and troubleshoot basic issues reduces the load on service engineers.
